The story behind Accoil:
A decade-long case of stubbornness

Every startup has a story. Some are wild, some are scrappy, and some—like ours—are just the result of sheer bloody-mindedness.

For us, it all comes back to one word: Accoil. Today, we’re peeling back the curtain on how our name came to be, why it refused to die over the years, and why it’s the perfect fit for what we do—helping teams gather together, organize, and make sense of customer health data.

The accidental name that stuck

Picture this: It’s December 2015. We’re hunting for a name for our previous venture—a form-building startup that would become ThinkTilt (later acquired by Atlassian). Cue endless domain searches, rejected ideas, and questionable brainstorming sessions.

Then, in what can only be described as an act of pure efficiency, when asked to join the fray my wife took all of about three minutes to find Accoil, an old obsolete word from the 1500s, which means, as it turns:

accoil (v): to gather together or to collect

A perfect name and meaning for a new forms product.. well… almost.

The .com problem

Like all good startup stories, we hit a roadblock. Accoil.com wasn’t available.

And in startup land, if you don’t have the .com, you might as well not exist. Rather than shelling out for a domain that was unavailable (or worse—insanely expensive), we pivoted. We ran a naming competition, threw some cash at it, and landed on ThinkTilt instead.

But Accoil never really went away. It lingered in the background as a codename, popping up in projects, internal tools, and the back of my mind.

A name that won’t quit

Here’s a fun little hack: in many marketplaces, names that start with “A” appear first.

Not quite as good as AAA Plumbing, but way ahead of Adobe or Amplitude. Sometimes, it pays to be at the front of the line.

For years, Accoil was on ice. And then, in 2024, the timing was finally right.

Bringing Accoil back (for real this time)

Fast forward to late 2023: we’d acquired Sherlock, an old customer health app, and we wanted to give it a fresh start. We knew exactly what we wanted to build—a product that gathers and organizes customer health signals into meaningful insights. And what better name for an analytics tool built to gather together and collect than… well… Accoil?

This time, I wasn’t messing around. Without even checking in with my co-founders (sorry, team), I engaged GoDaddy’s brokerage service. The domain wasn’t exactly cheap, but it also wasn’t five figures. So I pulled the trigger.

Boom: accoil.com was ours.

So, what’s in a name?

Honestly? A lot.

Accoil is more than just a cool-sounding word—it perfectly fits what we do. We help teams collect data, pull it together in one place, and turn it into actual insights that drive smarter decisions.

It also speaks to something bigger: this isn’t a half-baked idea. We’ve been sitting on this name, and this concept, for nearly a decade. We’re in this for the long haul, and Accoil is here to stay.

What’s next?

We’ve waited ten years to build this. Now that it’s here, we’re all in. Accoil isn’t just another analytics tool—it’s a long-term bet on the future of customer success.

So, if you’re a software engineer who loves tackling gnarly data problems or a custom support / success leader who actually wants insights that make sense, we’d love to chat.

Let's building something great — together.
